FAQ

Every legally employed person in Poland has access to free medical services. This includes visits to family doctors and specialists, and examinations, etc.

The employer is obliged to register the employee with the social security authorities within 7 days of the commencement of the contract. Pupils and students are registered by the educational institution and are not subject to registration by the employer.

1. How do I contact the doctor and what should I take with me?

First of all, you should find a public health care centre in your area (Przychodnia NFZ) and register there. To do so, enter “przychodnia NFZ+name of town” into Google, e.g.: Przychodnia NFZ Zagórz.

You can also use a special search engine: https://gsl.nfz.gov.pl/GSL/GSL/POZ

Choose any health care centre from the list; take your passport and personal ID No. PESEL with you to get registered.

After filling in a statement, you can immediately make an appointment with your family doctor (GP).

The GP can refer you to specialists, give you a prescription for medicines, or give you a sick leave.

You can change your health care centre twice a year. You can change health care centre again if you change your place of residence.

2. L4 (sick leave)

You must give the doctor your PESEL number to get sick leave.
Most doctors issue sick leave electronically, in which case you will not receive a confirmation on paper.

3. Is it possible to take advantage of paid sick leave on the basis of contract employment?

Yes. It is necessary to submit an appropriate application to your employer that you wish to pay a voluntary sick leave contribution. Voluntary sick leave insurance amounts to 2.45% of gross salary.

During sick leave, the employee receives 80% of the average salary.

4. My IKP - what is it?

The Patient’s Online Account (Internetowe Konto Pacjenta) is a useful mobile application where you can view all prescriptions and referrals issued to you. The app adapts to the language installed on your phone. When going to the pharmacy or doctor, simply enter the prescription code or referral code, respectively.
